The contractor running the canteen at the South Goa District Collectorate has been given 48 hours to stop discharging solid waste and to clean up the storm water drain or face closure of the facility.

A day after Sanguem-based activist Jervis Fernandes highlighted how the overflowing sewage and waste water drain in the district Collectorate complex is posing nuisance and a health hazard to the visitors, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira served the 48-hour deadline on the canteen contractor to stop the waste discharge in the drain or face closure.

After discussing the matter with Executive Engineer, PWD, Buildings, the Minister said the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) will inspect the site and order closure of the canteen facility. “Take note, that the GSPCB will shut down the canteen if the waste discharge is not stopped forthwith,” he said, while directing the canteen contractor to clean up the drains within the deadline.

The social activist had on Monday highlighted the pathetic situation at the district Collectorate complex wherein sewage and waste water from the canteen side was overflowing into the storm water drain.

What had infuriated the social activist was the fact that he had drawn the attention of the district Collector, South on the situation around 10 days ago, but in vain.
