South Goa authorities step-in to restore normalcy in communally sensitive Rumdamol Housing Board

MARGAO
Days after the area was rocked by violent incident, the South Goa district authorities have stepped-in in the Rumdamol Housing Board in a bid to restore normalcy in the communally sensitive area.

Sources told The Goan that the Rumdamol panchayat secretary was called by the district officials and given a brief to initiate action that would restore confidence of the people. Sources informed that the panchayat secretary was told to convey a message to the owner of the madrassa not to conduct the activities for the moment. The panchayat secretary was further informed to ensure that the beef stalls operating in the area do not in any way hurt the sentiments of any community.

Accordingly, Rumdamol Sarpanch Mubeena Faniband, the panchayat secretary and the panchayat members inspected the beef stalls and requested the owners to ensure that the meat is not exposed openly.

They have been told to conduct the activity in such a way that the beef meat is not directly exposed to the people moving on the road. The owners were requested to ensure the activity does not result in parking issues for the community as a whole and to take measures that would ease parking and traffic issues outside the shops.

As far as the madrassa is concerned, the panchayat secretary was believed to have sent a message to the owner to come to the panchayat for discussion on the activity.

Meanwhile, the Goa Police, which had come under the scanner on Sunday after a group of people took out a march, shouting Jai Shivaji and Jai Bhavani, culminating in the ransacking of the beef stalls, has intensified patrolling in the sensitive housing board.

In fact, in a move to instill confidence amongst the people inhabiting the housing board, a team of police officers from the Margao Sub-Division led by DySP Santosh Desai, Maina-Curtorim PI Ravi Desai, Colva PI Theron D’Costa, Cuncolim PI Tukaram Chawan, Margao PI Tulsidas Naik and Fatorda Ditendra Naik conducted a march in the housing board on Wednesday as precautionary measures.

Panch Volvoikar blames p’yat for delay in taking action against madrassa

MARGAO: Rumdamol Panchayat member Vinayak Volvoikar on Thursday blamed the panchayat body behind the delay in stopping the madrassa from conducting the illegal activities in a residential area.

He said the simmering discontentment amongst the people that the panchayat was not even interested in issuing a stop notice to the madrassa burst out in the open on Sunday after an abortive attempt was made on his life on late Saturday night.

Briefing the media, Volvoikar said, “The NOC had expired long ago. There was a condition in the NOC that it will be revoked if there are complaints from the locals and law and order situation. Though the issue had figured at the last many gram sabhas with people demanding a stop to the illegal activities, the panchayat ignored the sentiments of the people.”
