The Goa government has granted in-principle nod for setting up State’s first Canal solar power project to generate 336 MW of renewable energy for farming activities without consuming any agricultural land.

The State has sought a proposal from the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for installation of a 336 MW solar power plant on the irrigation canal top and canal side.

Minister for New and Renewable Energy (NRE) Ramakrishna Dhavalikar in a reply tabled on the Floor of the House has said that feasibility study was carried out for installation of solar power plant on irrigation canal top and canal side.

He said that the State has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IOCL for the installation of a ground-mounted solar power plant, and a proposal for a canal-based solar power plant is currently being sought.

Dhavalikar further said that Satlaj Jal Vikas Nigam (SJVN), a public sector undertaking under Union Power Ministry, has carried out feasibility for setting up four floating solar plants on Selaulim, Amthane, Anjunem and Chapoli dam with a total power generation capacity of 197 MW. The State will have to purchase the power from the PSU at Rs 3.8-4.3 per kWh.

Informing about the various proposals of the government with regards to green energy generation, the Minister said that expression of interest for setting up 100MW wind power through vertical axis wind turbine has been invited for Design, Build, Finance, Commission, Operate and Maintenance basis, with land identification and feeding of power to the nearest sub-station being under consideration.
