All India Congress Committee Secretary for Goa, Dr Anjali Nimbalkar on Saturday set the ball rolling to regain the Benaulim seat as she blessed and supported the Benaulim Block Congress Committee in an effort to recover lost ground and to regain the seat in the 2027 Assembly election.

The AICC Secretary said the issue of alliances with like-minded parties are issues that will be discussed in the run up to the 2027 elections, saying the Congress is presently on the ground to strengthen the party organisation to face future challenges.

After attending a programme organised by the Benaulim Block Congress Committee on Saturday, Dr Nimbalkar conceded to that the Congress has not won the Benaulim seat in the last 20 years, but exuded confidence of winning the seat in the 2027 Assembly election. “The Benaulim Block Congress is actively working on the ground. The leadership is scouting for a ‘sure shot’ candidate who will win the Benaulim seat in 2027,” she asserted. Congress senior vice-president M K Sheikh and South Goa district Congress chief Savio D’Silva attended the meeting.

When the media drew her attention to the fact that Benaulim seat is being represented by the Aam Aadmi Party, which is an alliance partner of the Congress party, the AICC Secretary said, “there is time to discuss the politics of alliances. Elections for the Goa Legislative Assembly are two years away. The issue of alliances will be discussed at the right time. We are here now to strengthen the party organisation in Benaulim. If there is no organisation, the question of discussing alliances will not arise,” she said, while exuding confidence that the Congress will regain Benaulim in the 2027 election.

When the media drew her attention to the claims made by AAP that the party has given a huge lead for the Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Dr Nimbalkar shot back, “When there is victory, everyone comes to claim credit, but when there is a defeat, one tends to push the blame on others.”

She added: “Both the Congress and AAP are members of the INDI Alliance. May be, AAP had worked for the Congress party in the Lok Sabha election, but we should not forget the fact that Congress has a huge presence in Benaulim constituency.”
