MAPUSA

A Mapusa court on Tuesday extended the police remand of two teachers accused of assaulting a nine-year-old student at a private school in Camurlim for an additional five days.

The decision came after the teachers, Sujal Gawade of Verem and Kanisha Gadekar of Pirna, were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) following the expiration of their initial five-day police custody.

The court granted the police request for further remand to continue their investigation.

The two teachers, Sujal Gawade and Kanisha Gadekar, were arrested by Colvale Police on September 5, and were suspended by the school management at Shree Saraswati Vidyamandir Primary School on the directive of the Education Department.

They are accused of severely beating a Class IV student, leaving the child with multiple injuries, including bruises, cut marks, and blood clots, after one of the teachers allegedly struck the student with a steel ruler.

Initially charged under Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act and various provisions of the BNS, additional charges under Section 82 of the Juvenile Justice Act were later added.

The complaint was filed by the student’s father.

The case has sparked public outrage and concern over the handling of the incident, prompting further scrutiny by authorities.
