After days of inconvenience and safety concerns, the South Western Railways (SWR) has completed repairs on the uneven road near the Velsao railway gate crossing, bringing much-needed relief to residents.

The road had been left bumpy and hazardous following earlier railway construction work, leading to frequent minor accidents and creating significant challenges for traditional fishermen transporting their fresh catch.

Local fishermen had long voiced complaints about the poor road condition, which often caused fish baskets to fall off their vehicles, resulting in financial losses. “Navigating the road was extremely difficult, especially with heavy baskets. Many of us faced accidents and delays,” a fisherman said.

The issue gained attention after social worker Roquezinho D’Souza highlighted the struggles faced by fishermen, senior citizens, and other residents. He brought the matter to the notice of Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and Railway Officer Meeraj Gaffar from Sanvordem. D’Souza explained, “The tiles removed during earlier railway work were not replaced, leaving the road uneven and risky, especially for the elderly, disabled individuals, and two-wheeler riders. Residents were frustrated with the delay, and there were several reports of minor accidents.”

Following the complaints, SWR authorities began repair work on 5 November. Railway officers inspected the site and assured locals of swift action. A railway official was assigned to oversee the work to ensure quality and timely completion.

On Friday, SWR announced the completion of the repairs, restoring the road to a smooth and level surface. The timely intervention was met with gratitude from the community. “This will greatly improve our daily commute and make it easier for fishermen to transport their catch,” a resident remarked.

The completion of this long-pending work highlights the importance of community advocacy and effective collaboration between locals and railway authorities.
