With the Julus procession taken out by the Muslim community on the occasion of Eid-E-Milad Un Nabi scheduled on September 28, a delegation of members of the Muslim  community on Monday had an interaction with senior police officers to finalize the procession route.

In recent years, the Julus procession was being taken out from the Jamia Masjid, Malbhat before it used to wend it way to Pajifond-Old Hospicio-Ravindra Bhavan, Margao when the district  administration had resolved to shift all major processions and festivals, including the Shigmo and Carnival parade to the Ravindra Bhavan route.

However, given that the district administration this year has brought back both the Carnival and Shigmo float parades back to the old route from the Holy Spirit Church to the Margao Municipal route,  officials say the Muslim community will be justified if they seek permission to take out the Julus procession on the old route, from the Jamia Masjid, Malbhat to the Municipal garden route.

The delegation comprising of Chairman of the Goa Haj Committee Urfan Mulla, Sheikh Riyaz and others told the media after the meeting with  Sub-divisional police officer, Margao DySP Santosh Desai that the police has requested them to give their Julus procession route.

“We have been taking out the Julus procession to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed peacefully over the years and without causing inconvenience to the people. People of Goa, including Hindus, Christians and Muslims have maintained the rich traditional of communal amity and brotherhood and we will maintain this tradition”,  Mulla told the media.

DySP Santosh Desai said the delegation was called for discussions to decide on the Julus procession route given that the Ganesh festival is still  underway in the city.

“The police have told the organizers of the Julus procession to submit their procession routes to the deputy Collector, Margao”, he said, adding that the police would take a call as and when the application for permission is received from the deputy collector’s office.
