There was concern in Velsao, particularly across Dando area, after the South Western Railways announced a temporary closure of the railway crossing gate.

The closure, scheduled from Monday midnight until early Tuesday morning, raised concerns among residents about the potential impact on emergency services.

Responding to the situation, social worker Roquezinho D'Souza visited the site to assess the matter. He clarified that the closure would last from 11.30 pm on Monday to 6 am on Tuesday, but assured residents that the railways would station an officer at the gate throughout the night to manage any emergencies.

“I spoke with the Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and the railway authorities. We emphasised that the Dando area, a fishing village, relies heavily on transport during the early hours, particularly for the transportation of fish and ice. Additionally, concerns were raised about ambulances and fire brigades not being able to cross the gate during emergencies,” said D'Souza.

Railway officials are reported to have assured D'Souza that appropriate arrangements would be made to ensure that no one would be left stranded during this temporary closure.

While this immediate solution has provided some relief, D’Souza stressed that the village needs a permanent fix.

“There has been no proposal from local panchayats to construct an underpass or a railway overbridge, which is urgently needed as a long-term solution,” he added.

Youth leader Aliston Pinto also expressed his views on the situation, echoing the need for a sustainable solution for the village.
