Popular comedian from the Konkani stage, Matheus Correa, better known as comedian Selvy, has been admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) and the news of his illness gave shockers to the tiatr fraternity in Goa. As the news of Selvy’s illness went viral on social media, causing distress among the tiatr fraternity, many tiatrists visited him in the hospital to inquire about his health condition. A friend of all, Selvy is gradually recovering from his illness, said his friends from the tiatr world.
Tiatrist Ben Evangelisto, another multitalented comedian of the Konkani stage shared that the WhatsApp group of tiatrists is witnessing a continuous flow of messages from across the State and even abroad, offering moral support to Selvy. “Selvy is very popular for his comedy, especially among the children, and we need him back on stage,” said Ben who said the news of his sudden illness came while a show was going on at Pai Tiatrist hall. “We were told that he was taken to GMC by an ambulance. As I am disabled, I need someone to drive me, so I could not go. But the news shook us all,” he said.
Churchill Alemao, former MLA from Benaulim expressed shock over the news of Selvy’s admission to GMC. “The news has shocked me that Selvy is seriously ill and battling for his life at GMC. He has been a very popular comedian who spread laughter across Goa,” said Churchill, praying for the speedy recovery of the comedian.
Anthony Barbosa, a close friend of Selvy stated that the entire tiatr fraternity has been praying for Selvy. “We want to see Selvy back on stage very soon,” said the Manora Raia resident who visited Selvy and his family at GMC in this hour of crisis. “Selvy was admitted late night on July 13 and I tried calling him and his son comedian Myron, both of who did not answer. Being worried, I visited him at GMC next day to check on his medical condition. He was happy to see me and responded well,” said Barbosa.
Tiatrist and political singer of Konkani stage Francis de Tuem shared that the day Selvy was admitted he had left for Gadhinglaj, but he had a telephonic conversation with him. “We are constantly in touch with him and he said that he is out of danger now. So, we are hoping to find him soon among us,” said Francis.
“The tiatr stage has been enriched by the tiatrists and the audience. Falling sick of any of the actors, especially a popular comedian is a sad thing, as he is the person who keeps all his sorrows hidden inside his heart and spreads laughter. The news of comedian Selvy’s illness has saddened us. We have been praying for his health,” stated tiatrist Lawry Travasso.
