PORVORIM
Water released from the Tillari Canal on Monday finally reached the water reservoir at Porvorim on Wednesday evening and regular water supply is expected to be restored on Thursday.
When contacted, Water Resources Department (WRD) Chief Engineer Pramod Badami told The Goan that water from Tillari is required to travel by gravity across a distance of about 62 kms from Tillari dam, of which 27 kms lies in Maharashtra and rest of the distance is in Goa.
“Once the water reached the Guirim pump house, it was diverted to Porvorim and water reached the Porvorim reservoir at around 3.30 pm. As soon as the reservoir is filled, a sample will be taken and if found suitable for consumption, it will be treated and supplied to residents of Porvorim constituency,” said Badami.
Pipeline from Amthane to Porvorim
Badami further mentioned that the WRD is working on an alternate project to supply raw water from Amthane dam to the Porvorim water treatment plant, so that residents in Porvorim constituency do not face water shortage in case the Tillari canal is breached in future.
“A separate pipeline is being laid from Amthane dam to the Porvorim reservoir at a cost of Rs 110 crore. The distance from Amthane to Porvorim is about 29 kms and work to lay the pipeline has been completed upto 20 kms,” said Badami.
“The work to lay the pipeline for the remaining 9 kms is expected to be completed before monsoon this year.”
“The work to set up a pump house at Amthane is going on in full swing. Once this project is completed, the residents in Porvorim constituency will not face any water shortage even if the Tillari canal is breached again. The Porvorim water reservoir will receive raw water from Amathane,” Badami added.
