The Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has announced a public hearing on December 23 to address objections and suggestions regarding the proposed World Peace University project at Tivim.
The hearing will take place from 12 noon to 1 pm in the board room of the IDC office at Patto Plaza, Panaji.
According to a notice issued in a local daily, only individuals who have already submitted their objections or suggestions to the Directorate of Industries, Trade, and Commerce will be allowed to participate in the hearing.
The proposed project, spearheaded by the Pune-based World Peace University, has stirred significant controversy in Tivim.
The Goa Investment Promotion and Facilitation Board (IPB) had earlier proposed designating 2 lakh square meters of comunidade land in Tivim as an investment promotion area after the project received in-principle approval through the State government’s single-window clearance system.
However, the decision to allocate such a large parcel of land at a low rate has sparked widespread opposition among locals.
Villagers and gauncars of the comunidade have consistently protested against the project, questioning its necessity and impact on the community.
Further intensifying the matter, some gauncars and villagers have filed a complaint with the Colvale Police against the outgoing managing committee members of the comunidade.
The complaint alleges that the committee passed a resolution in favour of the private university without following proper procedure.
With tensions running high, the upcoming public hearing is expected to witness heated discussions as locals voice their concerns over the project’s implications and the manner in which the land was earmarked for investment.
