A car with four youth reportedly from the Navy’s Sea Bird project in Karwar rammed into a stationary truck at Madditolop in Loliem-Polem village on Thursday evening.
According to police, the UP-registered car was heading towards Karwar, when it swerved and rammed into a stationary truck parked by the side of the NH66 near a petrol pump at Madditolop in Loliem-Polem.
The truck was parked off the road and the truck driver was resting inside the truck cabin when he was shaken awake after the car rammed into the rear of the truck.
Luckily, the car which strayed from left to right side missed hitting at least two vehicles in the oncoming direction.
Incidentally, a lot of people, including a few drivers of parked heavy vehicles in the area, rushed towards the car and were surprised to see the driver still sitting behind the wheels, and three other occupants peacefully asleep inside. No one had made any attempts to come out of the car.
The driver and two other occupants were allegedly heavily drunk and unmindful of what had happened to them or their car. A fourth youth who was in a slightly better position to walk, came out almost after 10 minutes, as people sought to persuade the others to come to safety.
A police team reached the site and took the occupants to the police station.
The youth later claimed that they are naval staff based at the Seabird project in Karwar. The Naval authorities were notified and a naval team later visited the Canacona police station. Canacona Police registered a case against the driver under 184 Section of the MV Act for rash and negligent driving and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 against the driver of the car.
All four occupants were then referred for alcohol tests and police said their tests were still awaited, at the time of going to the press.
After payment of the penalty, the youth were reportedly handed over to the naval officers.
According to sources, the four youth had travelled in their car to enjoy the beaches in Canacona.
The youth were reportedly intoxicated and while returning had reportedly hit someone in Canacona on their way. They unofficially settled the claim and continued to drive, before going off the road and ramming into the rear of a stationary truck parked on the opposite side of the road near the petrol Pump at Madditolop.
