All Goa Carpenters’ Association has resolved to knock on the doors of the MLAs to restore the OBC status enjoyed by the carpenters over the years.
After his election as the President of the Association, Joaquim Furtado told the media on Sunday that the members of the Association will call on the MLAs to take up their cause and ensure their OBC status is restored by the government.
The Christian carpenters have been enjoying the OBC status along with their Hindu counterparts over the years. The situation, however, changed after the High Court ruled that the OBC status is not applicable to Christian carpenters, which later resulted in the disqualification of the Aam Aadmi Party Benaulim Zilla Panchayat member Hanzel Fernandes earlier this year.
Joaquim Furtado pointed out that Christian carpenters have been enjoying OBC status over the years, wondering why they are not treated on par with the Charis and the Mestas. “We have decided to call on the MLAs to take up our cause with the government to restore our OBC status,” Joaquim told the media after he was declared elected as the president of the All Goa Carpenters’ Association.
