Voicing concern over the negative influence of social media, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has said social media is being used to spread negativity and creating confusion in the minds of public.
Godinho was addressing a gathering during the Liberation Day celebrations organised by the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate at Jogger’s Park in Dabolim.
The event began with the hoisting of the national tricolour, followed by Godinho's speech highlighting Goa's achievements and the challenges faced by the State.
Godinho emphasised Goa's distinction as one of the best-performing small states in India, particularly in terms of economic prosperity.
"Goa has the highest per capita income in the country. This achievement is the result of people's dedication across various fields. However, we must not forget the sacrifices of those who fought for the state’s liberation," he said.
Godinho then turned his attention to voice his concern on social media.
“Unfortunately, social media is being used to spread negativity, creating confusion in people's minds. This hampers democratic functioning and progress,” Godinho remarked.
Addressing criticism from the opposition, Godinho criticised their stand on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
"Opposition parties blame EVMs when they lose elections but remain silent when they win, showcasing double standards. Goa has been a victim of propaganda spread through social media," he stated.
The minister also addressed controversies surrounding infrastructure projects, including the Rs 1,800 crore flyover from Dabolim to Verna.
"This flyover will ease traffic congestion and reduce accidents, yet it is portrayed negatively. Similarly, Joggers Park had also faced undue criticism,” Godinho noted.
Highlighting the state’s development, Godinho pointed to the construction of broad highways, world-class airports, and iconic bridges. "These are testimonies to the government's commitment to progress over the last 15 years. Goa has now become a globally preferred destination," he said.
Godinho praised the Indian Navy for its cooperation in operating the Dabolim Airport alongside civilian authorities.
“The Navy has relaxed NOTAM timings to accommodate civilian flights. Contrary to false propaganda, Dabolim will never become a ghost airport. Tourism and air traffic will only grow,” he asserted.
Godinho reiterated the State government's commitment to building world-class infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Goans.
“A good government prioritises its people’s welfare and progress, and that is exactly what we are doing,” he said.
The Liberation Day celebrations ended with cultural performances and tributes to the freedom fighters who contributed to the state’s liberation.
