Incessant rain and gusty winds brought down a huge tree on the main district road of Mapusa blocking traffic and snapping power lines on Monday morning even as fire officials attended to at least seven other tree fall calls from different parts of Bardez during the day.
Several internal roads in front of the Guirim panchayat were submerged under water making life difficult for motorists and pedestrians.
The continous downpour led to the collapse of a jungle tree on the main Mapusa road at around 11 am. No casualties were reported.
The otherwise busy road had relatively low traffic since it was a Sunday and it was raining.
For almost three hours the traffic moving northwards had to be diverted as the area was finally cleared of debris by 2 pm in the afternoon.
Mapusa fire officials along with municipal workers were continuously working to clear the site.
Local councillor, Shashank Narvekar was also present.
The fire officials were on their toes as at least seven other calls were reported from Aldona, Tivim, Chapora and other areas in Bardez.
The torrential rains for the last 10 days inundated almost all the fields in Guirim. Several internal roads, especially the one opposite the local panchayat office in the village also went under the water.
Local residents had a tough time negotiating through the roads filled with knee deep water.
“This is happening almost every year during the monsoon. At least three to four times during the monsoon season these roads get inundated. The authorities should at least increase the level of the roads or dredge the water bodies deeper so that they can take the extra rain water,” said a local from the village.
