Mandrem Police arrested two persons in Banda, Maharashtra, on charges of posing as ‘godmen’ and duping a woman from Parcem-Pernem of her gold ornaments worth Rs 8.5 lakh on the pretext of performing rituals.
Amita Naik of Chonsaiwadda-Parcem had filed a police complaint stating that three accused persons, all claiming to be ‘godmen’, went to her house.
They are alleged to have induced her to hand over her gold ornaments on the pretext of performing special rituals that would bring peace and prosperity to the complainant.
Naik said the accused failed to return the ornaments and fled, thereby dishonestly misappropriating ornaments worth Rs 8.5 lakh.
Mandrem police registered a case under Sections 318(2), 316(2) r/w 3(5) B.N.S. 2023.
During the course of the investigation, two accused, Vijay Shinde (31) and Dada Ingole (43), both from Solapur, Maharashtra, were traced to Banda, Maharashtra.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in the crime. The stolen property worth Rs 8.5 lakh was later recovered, and the accused are presently in police custody.
Investigation is in progress to determine whether the accused are involved in similar offences in other parts of the State.
Further investigation is in progress under the guidance of the Mandrem police inspector, under the overall supervision of Pernem SDPO Ashish Shirodkar and SP North Akshat Kaushal.
