A day after the sensitive area was hit by communal tension and clashes, an uneasy calm prevailed at the Rumdamol Housing Board complex on Monday, with the Goa police maintaining strict vigil in the sensitive areas of the village and the neighbouring Gogol Housing Board.
In another development, a meeting of members of the majority community was held at the Swami Samarth Gad Temple Hall at Rumdamol on Monday evening which was attended by people from across the state.
Sources pointed out that the president of the Swami Samarth Gad Temple committee Jayesh Naik who had sustained injuries to his head in Sunday’s clashes with members of the Muslim community explained to the participants the chronology of events that resulted in the clashes.
Jayesh is believed to have claimed that the land where the flag was put up would come in the possession of the Temple trust. He recalled that a mob had damaged the house of a member of the majority community over 10 years ago in the Housing Board.
Goa police maintained a vigil outside the meeting hall as a precautionary measure, even as reports stated that life went on as usual without any untoward incident.
Both Jayesh and his son Om, who have been booked by the Maina Curtorim police on charges of hurting the religious sentiments and for assault, have moved the South Goa Sessions Court for anticipatory bail.
The police have pointed out that no arrests have been made so far, adding that the police are investigating the complaints and cross complaints lodged by members of both the groups.
Meanwhile, the Maina Curtorim police continued patrolling in the sensitive areas of the Rumdamol Housing Board on Monday. The Fatorda police has also intensified patrolling in the neighbouring Gogol Housing Board to avert any untoward incident following the Sunday clashes between members of the two religious communities.
