Union MoS Naik says 'No' to waste treatment plant at Old Goa

PANAJI: Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik today urged the Goa government to rethink on its plan to set up a solid waste treatment facility at Bainguinim in Old Goa, which is a notified UNESCO world heritage site.

Speaking to media persons, Naik said that the government, in the larger interest of the people, should rethink and shift the proposed facility out of Old Goa.

He said that Old Goa is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and an international tourism destination.

“I have raised my concerns before and will continue to try to convince the government to shift the facility” Naik said.

Naik maintained that he is not against the project but against project coming up in Old Goa against public wish.

The Union MoS said that he has already raised the issue with the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Minister for Waste Management Atanasio Monserrate regarding the proposed location for the plant.

The garbage plant at Bainguinim is long overdue with project pending since 2002
