Unruly tourists at Fontainhas catches Panaji MLA's attention, assures action

Panaji: Days after Sao Tome and Fontainhas residents confronted tourists creating menace, Panaji MLA Atanasio Monserrate assured to flag the issue with respective authorities to bring discipline among the visitors.

The legislator met the aggrieved residents, who complained about how the tourists were creating nuisance and 'destroying peace'.

“I will assess the situation and hold talks with CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira and other relevant departments to implement the necessary measures,” Monserrate told reporters after he held a walk-a-talk with the residents in the heritage precinct.

The residents, on Tuesday, confronted tourists with a stick, expressing frustration over their disruptive behaviour. Illegal parking of rental vehicles, peeping into their residences, defacing the structures and its paint and creating a noisy scene along the areas were put forth during the meeting with Monserrate.

“The noise from tourists, the motorbikes, and the illegal parking in areas designated as no-motor zones is unacceptable. We plan to install larger signs with fines for misbehaviour to address this issue that has plagued us for years," local resident Aloo Gomes Pereira alleged claiming the issue is ongoing since three years and more.

“Our wives, sisters and daughters don’t feel safe walking the streets anymore. This kind of tourism is harmful to Goa; we need quality tourism, not this nonsense.”

Another resident, Afonso, added, “Our homes have been invaded. We have lost our privacy. Tourists constantly peer into our windows and dirty our walls. This is a daily occurrence, and we desperately need action.”

The residents demanded larger signages and imposition of fines among the violating tourists.
