The decision to settle for an "abandoned" and "unsafe" police staff quarters building at Arlem to house the proposed Fatorda police station with the government rushing in to meet the deadline set by TCP Minister and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai makes interesting reading.

Otherwise, consider this. This very same building was the cynosure of all eyes around half a decade ago, especially amongst members of the police fraternity when the occupants of the staff quarters were slapped with eviction notices on grounds that the building is unsafe for human habitation.
Apparently taking the claims of the PWD that the building was unsafe and may crumble for want of maintenance seriously, families of police personnel had no option than to shift to the government quarters at Pajifond or look out for new accommodation.
The PWD officials then had claimed that since the buildings housing the police staff quarters were in a dilapidated condition, and totally unsafe for human habitation, the structures will be razed down to make way for a housing colony for the policemen, but in vain.
Even police and PWD officials are now surprised over the decision to house the Fatorda police station at the Arlem police staff quarters, the very building which was declared unfit and unsafe for human habitation around half a decade ago. "The PWD had told us to leave the staff quarters on the premise the buildings are unsafe for human habitation. We fail to understand how the very same PWD officials had given their go-ahead signal to the police department to house the new police station in the same quarters", remarked a police official in the know. PWD officials were not ready to come on record and offer their comment on the structural stability of the Arlem police staff quarters, other than admitting that the occupants were made to shift the premises so as not to risk their lives.
When The Goan contacted TCP Minister and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai to shed light on the decision to house the Fatorda police station at one of the abandoned buildings, he shot back saying that the new police station will be housed only temporarily in the building. "This is a makeshift arrangement being made by the government for want of a full-fledged premises. I do not know the basis on which the PWD had got the occupants evicted from the staff quarters, but one thing is clear that the new police station will function from the building only as a temporary measure", Vijai said.
Unveiling his plan on the police station building, Vijai said while the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation will repair the building to house the new police station, one of the old buildings in the complex will be razed down to make way for the construction of a new premises. "As I said earlier, this is just a makeshift arrangement. What we are trying to do is to raze down one of the old buildings to make way for a modern police station in the same complex", Vijai assured.
