The accused driver whose reckless driving resulted in the death of a resort owner in Vagator late Saturday evening was into organising of events and is married to a Russian.

Although a native of Pune, he has been living in Goa for the last 10 years, Anjuna Police informed.

While a Mapusa court on Monday remanded the accused to four days police custody, police are waiting for the reports of the alcohol and drug use test of the alleged drunk driver.

According to police, the alcohol test may be in by Tuesday but the test for substance abuse may take several more days.

The alleged drunk driver Sachin Venu Gopal Kurup (42) was arrested by police for allegedly driving his SUV in a reckless and dangerous manner into the premises of La Maior Roma resort by Jolly Jolly Lester, Vagator which resulted in the death of the resort owner Remedia Mary Albuquerque (57) and injuring two other staff of the resort.

Anjuna Police arrested the accused for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Upset local residents and the relatives of the victim on Monday marched to the police station for the second day and demanded answers from Anjuna PI Prashal Desai on the line of investigation.

The locals wanted to know what was inside the black bag which was removed by a Russian woman from the SUV that killed the resort owner.

They also questioned how the woman was allowed to remove the bag when two police constables were posted at the site of the accident.

Locals also raised questions about the accused driving a Haryana registered vehicle when he was originally from Pune and living in Goa.

The Anjuna PI informed that they have identified and examined the bag but did not find anything incriminating inside it.

“We have obtained the footage from the resort and are verifying the details. We cannot reveal certain details because it may hamper the investigation,” Desai told The Goan.

Anjuna Police had said that the accused driver had gone to see his friend who was residing at La Maior Roma resort when the mishap happened.

Sources informed that soon after the accident the driver’s friend called his Russian wife to inform about the mishap and that is how she reached the resort and coolly went to the car and removed the mysterious black bag despite police presence.

Eye witnesses informed that the driver appeared stoned and therefore there was a strong possibility that he was either drunk or high on substance abuse.
