Members of various anti-coal groups on Monday agitated in the port town against coal handling and transportation in the State.

While the members also had plans to agitate outside the main gate of the Mormugao Port Trust, a huge police force was already present at the site to prevent any law and order situation and to ensure that the agitators would not block the roads, causing inconvenience to others due to the protest.

The police prevented the activists from agitating on the roads and requested the group to carry out their protest on the footpath.

Social activist Zarina Da Cunha, told the media that she had come in support of a call given against handling and transportation of coal in Goa.

“We are here only to appeal to the government not to kill Goans with coal and we are unarmed, tolerant and peaceful. We only need a clean and green Goa," said Da Cunha.

Wilbur Ticlo of Goencho Rakhondar said he had come as an individual to support the cause against coal in Goa.

"We have proof that Goans will not benefit with coal or double-tracking and yet, the government is insisting on helping some corporates. This can be stopped if all Goans, especially the youth unite on one platform to voice our concerns against coal and challenge the government,” said Ticlo.
