Veg supplies to Goa hit as heavy rains lash Belagavi

BELAGAVI

Vegetable supplies to Goa and other places were affected as a huge quantity of vegetables were left to spoil on account of incessant rains in Belagavi.

The makeshift wholesale vegetable markets were inundated as heavy rains have been lashing Belagavi and the north Karnataka region since Tuesday.

While farmers arrived with a huge yield, both markets in Autonagar and C PEd ground were filled with slush and water clogged, due to which loading-unloading and trading became almost impossible for the farmers.

Amid heavy rains, farmers had no option but to leave the vegetables to perish and several sacks of vegetable were seen strewn across the vegetable markets.

This, in turn, has affected supplies to Goa and other areas that depend on Belagavi for their daily vegetable needs.

As a result, despite the high yield, prices of vegetables, especially leafy vegetables like coriander, fenugreek (methi) and dill leaves (shepu), have soared due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, traders and farmers have appealed to authorities to either shift the wholesale vegetable market back to the APMC Market Yard or to take preventive measures for the smooth trading at the makeshift wholesale vegetable markets.
