Traditional vendors operating from footpaths and other roadside areas will be shifted to the recently renovated old market complex in Vasco City.
The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) led by Chairperson Leo Rodrigues on Tuesday carried out a joint site inspection of the site and even met all vendors scattered around the port town informing them that the old market complex was fully ready to accommodate all vendors under one roof.
Speaking to reporters after the joint site inspection, Rodrigues said the traditional vendors would be shifted into the complex on Wednesday.
“This was a full-fledged market complex earlier occupied by vendors for several years but after the place became dilapidated and with the roofing collapsing, the vendors moved out and started operating from outside the market.”
“During his tenure as councillor, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar took up the project for renovation under the chairmanship of Kritesh Gaonkar. The project was completed through GSUDA and we will finally bring back our Goan traditional vendors into this market," said Rodrigues.
Ward Councillor Shami Salkar said there was place for around 54 vendors in the renovated old market complex.
"This was our dream project for all our Goan traditional vendors who sit on footpaths and finally, they will be accommodated back into the complex. This will clear congestion from footpaths as well.
“The vendors also faced extreme hardships during monsoon and we informed all vendors to move back into the renovated complex and occupy their places,” said Salkar.
She said the market would now be a full-fledged place to buy all traditional products, including fruits and vegetables.
“Vendors have also agreed to return to the renovated complex and we are trying as a team to streamline market places in Vasco," said Salkar
MMC Market Committee Chairman Vinod Kinlekar and Councillor Damodar Naik also spoke on the occasion.
