A resident of Matol-Verna, has fallen victim to an online investment scam, losing Rs 2.6 lakh to unidentified fraudsters posing as representatives of BoFA Securities India Ltd.
According to the complaint filed by Alex Fernandes (58), the incident occurred between August 6, 2024, and August 13, 2024. The accused contacted Fernandes via WhatsApp and other social media platforms, luring him into investing in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) with promises of high returns. Believing the claims, the complainant deposited the amount in various bank accounts provided by the fraudsters.
After securing the funds, the accused ceased communication, thereby cheating the complainant through impersonation and misuse of communication devices.
Verna Police have registered an offence under Sections 318(4), 319(2) read with 3(5) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanchita (BNS) and Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act.
The investigation is being supervised by PI Melson Colaco of Verna Police Station.
