Fears raised over spread of epidemic

Strange it may seem, but true that waste dumped just metres away from the South Goa district hospital has found its way in the adjoining water body, throwing serious questions over the failure of the authorities including the Margao Municipal Council and the Health Department in cracking a whip against the waste dump.
As the dump threatens to turn into breeding ground for vector borne diseases, Chairman of the Margao Municipal Sanitation Committee, councillor Camilo Baretto questioned the silence of the authorities in initiating action against the dump. He told the media that he would urge MMC Chairperson Damu Shirodkar to immediately act in the matter before an epidemic spreads in the area.
Camilo has feared that the waste which has been found floating in the adjoining water body may spread to the paddy fields and the adjoining river Sal causing environmental issues.
He raised question why the Health Department and the civic body has not shown urgency in clearing the dump when the matter had come in public domain earlier this year. “The present state of affairs would not have arisen had the authorities acted against the dump,” he said.
