With the Green Booth installed by the authorities for waste collection turning the road side into a waste dumping yard at Sao Jose de Areal, the Goa Children’s Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of the problem as the waste poses a health hazard and nuisance to the children.

Goa Children’s Commission Chairperson Peter Borges on Friday visited the Green Booth installed alongside the road bordering the villages of Sao Jose de Areal, Davorlim and Curtorim to take stock of the situation.

Speaking to the media after his inspection, Borges said that he would send his report to the panchayats in the area.

“There are people living adjoining the booth. There is a school nearby which is attended by children every day,” he added.

The waste is affecting the children on their way to the school, he further said.

Ex-Curtorim Zilla panchayat member Moreno Rebello pointed out that waste dumping in the area had aggravated after the Goa Waste Management Corporation installed the booth.

“The objective of installing the booth might have been to facilitate people to dispose the waste safely. But, the facility has now converted the entire road into a waste dump with people disposing of the waste not in the booth, but along the road,” he said.

Davorlim Sarpanch Herculean Niasso told the media that the people from the three villages of Areal, Davorlim and Curtorim should help to end the menace.

“Though this place falls in Areal village, waste dumping is affecting people of all three villages,” he said.
