Bharatmala project is a key highway development project which envisions the development of 83,000 kilometers of highways. It is India's second largest highway development project after National Highway Development Project which saw the development of 50,000 kilometers of highways. Bharatmala project aims at ensuring a smooth flow of goods and services across India. Due to bad roads, trucks in India cover an estimated distance of 250kilometers in a day whereas in developing countries the distance is around 650 kilometers.
The plan under Bharatmala to ease the flow of goods and services also includes development of ports and a total of 44 economic corridors, one of which is the Goa-Hyderabad Economic Corridor.
