A massive fire engulfed a saw mill at New Vadem in Curtorim village on Sunday evening, destroying wooden logs worth lakhs of rupees.
The fire was believed to have occurred around 3 pm before Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco called up the Margao Fire brigade to inform about the fire incident.
Fire officials pointed out that the fire tender immediately rushed to Curtorim after receiving a call at around 3.15 on Sunday. A portion of the saw mill and the wooden logs was engulfed by fire when the fire tender turned up at the spot.
Given the gravity of the situation, the Margao fire brigade requisitioned the services of the Curtorim fire brigade to join in the fire fighting operations.
A fire officer told the media that the entire saw mill area was engulfed by fire.
“We cannot even ascertain the source and origin of the fire. Thick smoke billowing from the site is hampering fire fighting operations”, the officer said.
A team of fire fighters was on the job to extinguish the fire till late Sunday evening.
Further investigations is in progress.
