With the demolition of the old Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) building, work has now begun for the construction of the three-storeyed administrative-cum-commercial CMC building at Chaudi-Canacona.
The foundation stone for the new CMC building was laid by then urban development minister Milind Naik in the presence of former deputy speaker Isidore Fernandes and then CMC Chairperson Nitu Sameer Dessai on October 20, 2021.
However, work to shift the municipal administration and demolish the old CMC building was taken up several months later, after the new council was formed.
The Rs 10 cr project taken up by the GSUDA, has been allotted to a contractor and the Portuguese-era municipal council building was demolished over a period of two months.
The three-storeyed building will be constructed on 2,100 sq mtrs of municipal land and is likely to be completed in two years.
The State government has allotted Rs 7 crore of funds through the GSUDA and CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello said the rest of the funds have been mobilised by the CMC, which includes Rs 2 crore from the Goa Liberation Golden Jubilee celebration fund.
The new municipal building will have commercial/shops/ATMs and a canteen on the ground floor and the municipal offices and officers/chairperson cabins, meeting/conference hall on the first floor.
The second floor will have a public hall and other related amenities and facilities. The CMC administration is presently functioning at Dr Dhillon's Hospital near Char-rasta.
