A young rider from Sawantwadi died after he was knocked down by a truck at Patradevi-Pernem on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police reports, the incident took place at 2.30 pm opposite the excise
check post at Patradevi, when a Maharashtra-registered goods carrier truck, was proceeding from Patradevi towards Banda.
The truck proceeded in a rash and negligent manner without ensuring proper care or caution and on reaching near the excise check post, struck a scooter.
The scooter rider, Dennish Camil Fernandes (28) of Pagawadi in Insuli-Sawantwadi sustained grievous injuries and later breathed his last.
The accused driver fled from the spot without informing about the accident to police and without providing any medical help to the injured.
Mopa police have registered an offence against the truck driver under sections 281, 106 (2) of BNS and 134 (a)(b) of M.V. Act. Further investigation is in progress.
