Work on the ground between Taad Maad temple in St Inez to the Sewage Treatment Plant at Tonca meanwhile continued on Wednesday and about 120 metres of this nearly 200 metre long stretch, including laying the large pipeline, has been completed, a senior IPSCDL official confirmed.

He said this last stretch is where the entire city's sewerage network integrates and carries the sewage into the treatment plant at Tonca.

The official said, the soil is soft and sandy making work all the more difficult with land-slips and soil collapsing often the case.

Also, since the work is being carried out at depths of 10 to 12 meters under the ground, worker safety requires operations to stop at sundown giving them lesser time to work with.

"The difficult conditions forced us to abandon the trenchless technology and do the work on this entire stretch manually," the official said.

In addition to laying the 750 mm dia pipeline, two more sewerage manholes, house connection chambers, utility chambers, ducts, essential crossings and the concrete road with designer footpaths were also simultaneously being worked on along this 200 meter stretch, the official said.

Both the manholes have been completed and another stretch of about 50-70 meters of pipeline laying now remains to be completed, he added.

He however did not say why IPSCDL did not foresee these problems at the stage of planning or if any soil tests were conducted before commencing the work.
