21 convictions, 1,232 FIRs in 8 months of new criminal laws

Goa Police on Wednesday said it achieved 21 convictions under the three newly enacted criminal laws -- Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, and Bhartiya Saksha Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023 -- which came into effect on July 1, 2024. 

Since the implementation, a total of 1,232 cases have been registered under BNS.  

Superintendent of Police and PRO Rahul Gupta told the media that out of the total cases, 544 case reports were sent to the court under Section 193 of BNSS upon completion of investigations while the remaining cases are still under investigation. "In 23 cases, trials have been completed and courts have delivered judgments. Out of these, 21 cases have resulted in conviction, while two cases have led to acquittal," Gupta said.  

The 21 convictions include six cases of theft in a dwelling house, five cases of auto theft, three cases of causing obstruction in a public way, two cases of theft by an employee, one case of kidnapping/rape and one case of hurt. 

In one case from Mandrem Police Station involving theft in a dwelling house reported in July 2024, the investigation and trial were completed in just 17 days. Accused Deepak Nikam was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment and a fine.  

A snatching case under Section 304 BNS reported at Mardol Police Station saw accused Rajesh Mapari sentenced to 48 days of simple imprisonment.
