MARGAO
In light of a recent surge in thefts, robberies, and other criminal activities in Margao, the Madgavcho Awaaz has expressed deep concern about the safety and security of the city’s residents.
In a memorandum submitted to the Superintendent of Police, South, Sunita Sawant, Madgavcho Awaaz leader Prabhav Naik said the spree of thefts and robberies that have taken place in the last fortnight is a matter of great concern.
“It has come to light that the robbers have no fear and dare to break open the shops and establishments on the main roads of Margao city during the wee hours when there is continuous vehicular traffic movement. This shows that the police department has miserably failed to conduct night vigil patrols and nakabandis at crucial junctions,” he said.
"The New Market Traders Association has reported that some of the establishments, such as bars and taverns, are allowed to operate beyond the stipulated timings. There is a rampant rise in gambling dens in and around Margao,” Naik said.
Seeking the SP’s immediate intervention, Madgavcho Awaaz called for swift action from the police to curb the increasing crime rate and also urged stringent action against the antisocial elements who are disturbing the peace in society.
“As most Goans prefer to celebrate the eve of New Year as well as the New Year by visiting places of worship and attending celebrations away from their residences, the antisocial elements and criminals are likely to take this opportunity to conduct thefts and robberies,” he added.
Naik also called for streamlining the traffic management in the city and for the deployment of police and traffic personnel at various churches and chapels during the midnight mass to ensure that safety is provided to the people and that there is no traffic congestion. Strict action needs to be taken against drunken driving to avoid fatal accidents, he demanded.
