A group of Cavelossim residents on Monday demanded to know whether the road being built on comunidade property is a public or private road and whether the Public Works Department is involved in the construction of the road.
The residents demanded to know the basis on which the Cavelossim Panchayat had issued the NOC for the road construction.
Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz, however, pointed out that the party in question had produced the necessary permissions, adding that the Panchayat would make sure that the road, once built, is used by the public.
A group of residents comprising Natividade Fernandes, Clide Fernandes, and others told the media that trees and vegetation had been cleared to make way for the road. They also claimed that a sand dune had been tampered with, which had also destroyed water bodies.
Natividade Fernandes demanded to know which departments, including the Panchayat, had given permission for the construction of the road when it is not a public road. Demanding an inquiry, Natividade said the residents would write to the concerned departments, including the South Goa MP, for a thorough probe into the matter.
Clide Fernandes wondered why the PWD was not building the road, assuming the road was a public one. Saying a public road should lead to a particular destination, he pointed out that the road in question ends near the property of a company. “There are so many questions that need answers. We will approach the concerned departments for information,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz said the road in question is being built at the cost of the party, but added that the Panchayat would make sure the road is used for the general public. “You cannot stop them if they have the permissions. They must have brought the permissions from the concerned departments,” he said.
