Minister of State (Independent) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Friday informed the Lok Sabha that the Central government has provisionally appointed 296 legal practitioners as Notaries in Goa.

The reason for the provisional appointment is that a verification report of their particulars is awaited from the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.

In his reply to a question tabled by Congress MP Viriato Fernandes, the union minister revealed that as of December 9, a total of 4,453 digitally signed Certificates of Practice have been issued through the Notary Portal to candidates from various states who were selected for appointment as Notaries this year.

However, for the selected candidates in Goa, the verification report of their particulars is awaited from the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.

Meghwal further said that candidates whose online applications were submitted between August 25, 2018 and March 31, 2023 were interviewed for selection and appointment as Notaries. A public notice regarding their provisional selection was published by the Department of Legal Affairs on March 15, 2024.

The minister also noted that the renewal of Certificates of Practice for Notaries is an ongoing process and the applications for renewal are attended to and disposed of routinely by the Department of Legal Affairs.
