Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday praised the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for their unwavering support in transforming Goa’s infrastructure by investing Rs 40,000 crore since 2014.
Addressing a gathering during the inauguration of India’s first curved flyover-cum-cable-stayed overbridge from Ravindra Bhavan to Varunapuri in Vasco, Sawant pointed out the financial disparity between past governments and the current BJP leadership.
“From 2014 to 2025, Goa has received almost Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre, compared to less than Rs 400 crore in the 50 years before BJP’s governance. This is a testament to PM Modi’s commitment to a ‘Vikasit Bharat’ and ‘Vikasit Goa,’” Sawant said.
Speaking at the inauguration of major projects, including the loop flyover connecting to the port, Sawant outlined the significant progress Goa has achieved since 2014 under the “double-engine government” of BJP at both state and central levels.
“With the launch of four major projects and the inauguration of the loop flyover, Goa has reached a new milestone in connectivity. The real progress of Goa began in 2014 when PM Modi formed the government and Nitin Gadkari became the National Highway and Ports Minister. Gadkari’s visionary leadership has been instrumental in shaping Goa’s transport infrastructure,” said Sawant.
He recalled the groundbreaking decision to establish a National Highway from Patradevi to Polem, initiated by Gadkari, and lauded the former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for laying the foundation of Goa’s development.
“The inauguration of the Atal Setu was a historic moment during Parrikar’s tenure, and the same vision continues with the new Zuari Bridge, which has greatly improved connectivity between North and South Goa,” he said.
Sawant emphasised the strategic importance of the loop flyover, which connects the port with the railway and airport, calling it “one of the most impactful projects” envisioned by Gadkari. “This flyover will not only ease traffic congestion but also boost the Mormugao Port’s operations, including its new state-of-the-art cruise terminal. The dome inside the port will significantly reduce coal pollution, ensuring a cleaner environment,” Sawant added.
He also highlighted efforts to attract pharma companies to operate from Mormugao Port, akin to the Nhava Sheva Port, to boost the state’s import-export business.
Future vision for Goa
The Chief Minister also laid out a roadmap for the next 25 years, aligning with India’s centenary of independence.
“We are planning a ‘Vikasit Bharat, Vikasit Goa’ vision document that focuses on road, railway, and water connectivity. Metro rail is also under consideration to benefit the people significantly. Additionally, we aim to connect Konkan Railway with Western Railways,” he said.
Sawant expressed optimism about resolving challenges related to forests and mining areas to develop a parallel highway from Patradevi to Polem, which would further enhance tourism and regional connectivity.
“This new infrastructure will not only address current needs but also serve Goa for the next 25 years, ensuring sustainable development and economic growth,” Sawant concluded.
