The Tourism Department commenced the demarcation process for beach shacks on Monday, over a fortnight after issuing provisional licenses. The process began at Cavelossim and Benaulim beaches.

In a bid to ensure that shack operators can start their businesses in time for the tourist season that begins next month, the department expects to complete the demarcation before Ganesh Chaturthi subject to weather conditions.

“The demarcation of shacks has begun in South Goa, and we expect to conclude before Ganesh Chaturthi, depending on the rains,” Tourism Director Suneel Anchipaka said, speaking to The Goan.

Following the demarcation, shack operators must obtain NOCs from other relevant departments. President of the Shack Owners Welfare Society Cruz Cardozo stated that operators aware of their exact locations can proceed with the necessary formalities, including obtaining NOCs.

“If they know the exact locations where they set up their shacks previously, they can start the further processes to begin operations. Meanwhile, officials will continue with their formalities. For those who are uncertain, the demarcation will anyway take place as planned,” he stated, after a meeting with the tourism officials.

The Association also highlighted that some operators faced difficulties last season due to incomplete or no NOCs from key departments, which led to their licenses being withheld. This time, however, with the early start of demarcation, all required applications can be submitted promptly.

President of the Traditional Shack Owners Association Manuel Cardozo however stated that the demarcation in North Goa has not begun, probably due to heavy rains. “We are hopeful that the process will begin tomorrow (Tuesday),” he said.

With early demarcation, the shack operators are optimistic to begin the business either by month-end or the start of October. “We have begun inquiries from tourists…Businesses are expected to start by the start of the season,” Cruz added, view that was echoed by Manuel.
