GKF to meet MLA over equal status for Romi script

As part of the ongoing movement to demand equal status for Roman Script in the Official Language Act (OLA) and to introduce Konknni Roman Script in Schools, Global Konknni Forum (GKF) under its “Meet Your MLA – Kodel Zay vo Romi Lipi Zay” programme, will be meeting Benaulim Aam Aadmi Party MLA Venzy Viegas, on November 12 (Tuesday) at 10.30 am at his Benaulim office. 

Till now, GKF has visited eight MLAs and discussed with them the injustice met out to Roman Script, to which they agreed, and assured that they will bring the same to the notice of the government in the Winter Session of Goa Assembly.

During the visit to the MLAs, GKF proposes two Draft Bills: First, to amend the Official Language Act 1987, by granting equal status to Roman Script along with Nagari. Second, to propose the introduction of Roman Script Konknni in the schools, in a phased manner starting with Std I to Std X, from the next academic year. 

Global Konknni Forum Secretary Jose Salvador Fernandes said the Official Language Act can only be amended by the MLAs passing a Bill/Resolution in the House. He said it is the bounden duty of the elected representatives to listen to the demands of the people and pass the required legislation in the Assembly.
