The Goa Medical College (GMC) has got a 'record' 150 plus individuals pledging their bodies after death to the medical institution for medical teaching purposes.

The development comes less than a month after an appeal was sent out by the Union Health Ministry to States asking them to encourage people to donate dead bodies.

Director-General of Health Services Atul Goel had issued a note to health secretaries of States asking them to encourage the public to donate bodies on death to medical teaching institutions.

Dead bodies are used to teach about 'Anatomy', considered one of the most important subject in medical education for physicians, surgeons, dentists and other healthcare professionals.

In India, anyone wishing to donate their body are required to make prior arrangements with a local medical college or a hospital before death.

In the present instance, GMC Dean, Dr Shivanand Bandekar, said the 150-odd volunteers have pledged their bodies to the institutions through sworn affidavits.
