Focus on MPT, Cuncolim steel units

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has launched projects to reuse treated wastewater for industrial purposes.
These efforts not only reduce dependency on freshwater resources but also address environmental concerns such as carbon emissions and water wastage.
One of the first steps in this direction was taken in Vasco, where treated wastewater from the Baina Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is now being repurposed for use within the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) area.
The project, which will supply approximately 10 lakh litres of treated water per day, is well underway with MPT having deposited Rs 3.2 crore for the initiative. The pipeline installation to facilitate the water transfer is currently in progress.
The Cuncolim Industrial Estate has also emerged as a key site for innovative wastewater management. After conducting a detailed audit of the area, GSPCB identified an opportunity to repurpose wastewater from fish meal and fish processing units for the steel industry.
GSPCB Chairman Mahesh Patil highlighted that the discharge from these fish processing units meets the required standards, making it safe and effective for industrial use.
Two steel industries in Cuncolim have already started using treated wastewater for processes such as quenching and suppression.
Discussions are ongoing to encourage more industries to join this initiative. GSPCB is also exploring the feasibility of laying pipelines to directly supply treated wastewater, eliminating the need for tanker transport and further reducing the carbon footprint.
Chairman Mahesh Patil emphasised the long-term benefits of these initiatives, which are expected to significantly cut down on diesel consumption, transportation emissions, and costs associated with tanker water supply.
Launched on World Pollution Prevention Day, these initiatives underline GSPCB’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By integrating wastewater reuse into industrial processes, the board is setting a benchmark for sustainable industrial practices in the region.
