Locals, police address growing issue of beggars in Mapusa

Mapusa Merchants and Mapusa Jewellers recently convened with Mapusa Police to address the escalating issue of beggars and associated illegal activities in the Mapusa market and surrounding areas. Local residents and merchants highlighted a surge in beggar numbers near market areas and traffic signals. The police have identified a concerning trend where beggars are allegedly dropped off rather than finding their own way, prompting investigations into the individuals responsible.

In response to community concerns, the police urged locals not to engage directly but instead to capture videos and images for evidence, which can aid in subsequent police actions in collaboration with Street Providence. Issues highlighted by locals include public intoxication and unsightly living conditions, such as hanging clothes and littering.

The meeting aimed at boosting operational effectiveness within the market. Key outcomes of the meeting include plans to issue advisories listing emergency contact details of senior officers like the DySP, PI, and beat officers.

The merchants presented several demands during the meeting, including increased security through the deployment of security guards, enhanced lighting, tenant verification, scrutiny of abandoned vehicles, and CCTV installation at market entry and exit points.

Assuring proactive measures, the police pledged to crack down on unauthorized vendors and beggars. Beggars will either be directed to shelters or brought before the JMFC for legal proceedings. Additionally, gold shop owners were advised to restrict entry to individuals wearing face covers or sunglasses to bolster security measures.
