MAPUSA

A major 600mm diameter water pipeline burst at Duler, Mapusa, on Wednesday evening during excavation work for the installation of a new water pipeline.

The incident led to severe water wastage, flooding and disruption of the city's water supply.

The pipeline was damaged during excavation work when a JCB was operating along the roadside in the area.

The burst pipeline caused water to enter several houses, building basements and a sawmill, resulting in significant flooding in the area. Large volumes of water flowed onto the streets, forcing business owners to move their goods to safer locations to prevent damage.

Authorities acted swiftly, shutting off the water supply and initiating urgent repair work to control the situation.

Assistant Engineer of the PWD (Water Supply), Triptesh Sirsat, assured that the repairs would be completed soon, with normal water supply expected to be restored by Thursday.

The incident has once again raised concerns over infrastructure safety during excavation work, with residents and business owners calling for more caution in such projects to prevent similar occurrences.
