A significant fire broke out early Friday morning at the Wee Care 24x7 Supermarket, located behind Alankar Theatre in Angod, Mapusa.
The blaze, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, resulted in extensive damage to the store's inventory and infrastructure, leading to losses estimated in the lakhs of rupees.
The incident occurred around 4.30 am when two night-shift employees noticed smoke and flames inside the supermarket.
Despite their efforts to control the fire, it rapidly intensified, shattering glass panes and forcing the staff to evacuate the premises.
Firefighters from the Mapusa Fire Station, led by Ganesh Govekar, responded promptly to the emergency call. After battling the flames for nearly an hour, they successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent structures.
The fire destroyed a substantial amount of goods, including groceries, cosmetics, soft drinks and electronic equipment at the billing counter.
A two-wheeler parked inside the premises was also consumed by the flames. The supermarket's interior suffered severe damage, with many items reduced to ashes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Authorities are investigating to confirm the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damages.
