Issue taken up with Excise dept and police
MAPUSA
Concerned over the increasing nuisance caused by people who openly drink alcohol in the Mapusa market, the Mapusa Merchants Association (MMA) has taken up the matter with the authorities, urging strict enforcement of public drinking laws and tighter monitoring of alcohol sales in the area.
In a formal move, members of the association met with the Bardez Excise Inspector and submitted a written representation highlighting the growing disturbances created by individuals consuming alcohol in public.
According to the merchants, several miscreants procure alcohol from local wine shops and engage in disorderly behaviour, disrupting business activities and inconveniencing shopkeepers, customers, and pedestrians.
“These individuals have been drinking openly and causing a nuisance to people visiting the market. The authorities must take strict action against them,” said Siddesh Raut, Secretary of the MMA.
Merchants pointed out that the troublemakers, often seen behind the top row of shops in the market, indulge in unruly conduct, creating an unsafe atmosphere, particularly for women, children and the elderly.
This behaviour, they stressed, has raised serious concerns about public safety and the overall business environment in the marketplace.
Raut further stated that the association had taken up the matter with both the Excise Officer and the Mapusa Police Inspector, urging them to act swiftly in curbing the menace.
The MMA has been at the forefront of addressing issues affecting the market. In the past, the association has actively engaged with civic authorities to voice grievances and seek solutions for problems faced by the business community.
With the latest complaint, the merchants are hopeful that authorities will take decisive steps to restore order and ensure a more secure and business-friendly environment in the Mapusa market.
