MARGAO
Saying the drug menace is becoming a major issue, Law Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Friday told the police to order a crackdown on drugs with immediate effect.
At the Friday darbar held in the district Collectorate, the Minister told a team of senior police officials, comprising SP South Tikam Singh Verma and SDPO Margao DySP Sidhant Shirodkar, to start a vigorous and aggressive tenant verification drive in his Nuvem constituency.
During a media briefing, the Minister informed that the menace of drugs has become a major issue and hence told the police to order a crackdown. “I have told the police to crack down on drugs from today itself,” he said.
Saying that the police have been told to conduct a detailed and aggressive drive for the verification of tenants in the Nuvem constituency, Sequeira said the police might have conducted the exercise in the past, adding that he has told the men in uniform to conduct the exercise in an aggressive manner.
“I genuinely believe that the police have done the exercise since they came to my house and asked for police clearance for the workers employed at my home. In case anybody is left out, the police will bring them under the exercise,” he added.
The Law Minister further held a meeting with officials of the Margao Municipal Council regarding the kabrastan issue at Sonsodo. “Since there is a dispute over the road issue, I had asked the MMC officials to update me on the matter. There is a House Committee constituted to find a solution to the issue of common burial grounds. I have sought the file from the MMC and they have promised to get back with details on Monday,” he added.
The Minister said the meeting also resolved the issue of the ISL football match scheduled at the Nehru stadium on March 4, which coincides with the last day of the Carnival festivities. “We had a meeting with the Collector as well as the police officials, since Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has organised Carnival festivities on the same day. The match will go on as scheduled on March 4,” he added.
