One person lost his life and another sustained injuries during an unauthorised motorcycle race near the Ion Exchange Company at IDC-Verna on Sunday.

Verna Police have registered an offence under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act against the individuals involved.

The incident occurred at around 5 pm when two youth, identified as Mohammad Kaif (21) of Bethora-Ponda, and Subhan Babajan Pandari (24) of Dattagad-Ponda, were engaged in high-speed racing and performing stunts on their motorcycles. The motorcycles had no number plates, and the riders were not wearing helmets, violating safety norms and endangering public safety and human life.

According to the police complaint filed by Umesh Naik, Head Constable of Verna Police Station, the reckless racing led to the riders losing control of their motorcycles, which collided with each other.

Mohammad Kaif succumbed to his injuries due to the accident, while Subhan Pandari sustained serious injuries.

Verna Police have registered the case under Sections 125, 281, 125(a), 106(1) of the BNS, and Sections 194-D, 189, and CR.50 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigations are being carried out by PSI Pramila Fernandes under the supervision of PI Melson Colaco and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.

This incident underscores the dangers of unauthorised racing and reckless driving on public roads. Authorities have appealed to citizens to adhere to traffic rules and prioritise safety to prevent such tragic occurrences.
