Panaji's old fish market demolition begins; Commission issues eviction notice

Panaji: After much delay, the City Corporation has finally commenced the demolition of the old Municipal market building, housing the fish market. The demolition process will continue till November 8.

Earlier, on Wednesday, CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira issued an eviction notice to the fish cutters from the Panaji Municipal market, directing them to vacate the old premises to facilitate the demolition process.

What is interesting is that the fish cutters were granted hardly 24 hours to vacate, as the notice was issued on October 9.

In the notice, Madeira stated that the Corporation has decided to demolish the Fish Market Building to ensure safety and facilitate the demolition process.

The fish cutters have to vacate the premises by today, October 10, failing which the Corporation will be bound to remove them and their belongings without further notice.

There are growing concerns in the community regarding the demolition, particularly about a chapel located within the building. Local residents fear that destroying the chapel could hurt their religious sentiments.
