Protests against Velingkar erupt in North Goa

PANAJI
Away from Margao which became the epicentre of State-wide protests demanding the arrest of former Goa RSS chief, Subhash Velingkar for his derogatory statement against St Francis Xavier, people took to the streets at several places in North Goa too.

At Anjuna, a large crowd of people gathered in front of the Anjuna Police Station and occupied the space in the evening as tension rented the air. The protesters, like elsewhere, were demanding that Velingkar be arrested.

They stayed put till late night insisting that they would not budge until Velingkar was arrested even as they burnt tyres and other materials to block the Anjuna-Vagator road, which forced motorists to divert to alternative roads.

The Bicholim police had booked an FIR against Velingkar on Friday night based on the complaint filed before the Cuncolim police station by Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Velim MLA, Cruz Silva for his remarks made at a public function earlier this week.

Silva's complaint had accused Velingkar of deliberately trying to drive a wedge between the two major communities of the State.

In the capital city too dozens of people went to the Panaji police station where they handed over a memorandum demanding that Velingkar be arrested.
