Datta Damodar Naik, a dedicated son of Goa and a multilingual writer, was praised by Dr Shashi Tharoor during a civic felicitation at Gomant Vidya Niketan on Sunday.

Tharoor highlighted Naik’s passion for science and philosophy, as well as his efforts to uplift weaker sections of society. He described Naik as a committed Congress member, a patriot, and a secularist with democratic values. Tharoor was speaking on the topic ‘Idea of India’ at the event.

While discussing the Indian Constitution, Tharoor referred to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s words: “However good a Constitution may be, if those implementing it are bad, it will fail.”

Tharoor emphasised that power should not be misused, even if a leader has majority support.

He stated, “Constitutional morality must take precedence over individuals. The citizen is the true custodian of the Constitution, and we must remember that any majority is temporary.”

Tharoor also mentioned that he is writing a book on the Constitution, set to be published in May.
